I decided I was going to build a DIY Smart Saw and purchased the plans from the author. I went through the plans and the first thing I realized is that it needed someplace to sit so I decided that I would build a cabinet for it to sit on. The cabinet would house all of the attachments for the saw including the saw itself, the computer, all of the electrical components with the exception of the drive motors, the bits and a shop vac dust collector.
I decided that now would also be a good time to decide what size I wanted to build my smart saw and decided that I would build mine 1 meter, 40 inches long, by .5 meters, 20 inches wide. This would mean that I would need a cabinet 40 inches, 1 meter, long by 20 inches wide. Add on a few inches on each dimension for the drive motors and I get a cabinet 54 inches, 1370mm, long By 24 inches, 610mm wide. I decided that although the plans call for a steel frame with steel legs for the Smart Saw to sit on, I am a woodworker and I would build a wooden cabinet with wheels for my Smart Saw to sit on.
I also decided that since I have lots of scrap plywood laying around my shop that I would build the frame of my Smart Saw using laminated plywood beams. I will laminate the plywood using West System Epoxy.
Stay tuned for the next steps.
